Imagine a world where every girl has access to quality education. Do you see what we see? Endless possibilities. In that world, education becomes a source of hope, inspiring girls to dream big, challenge norms, and reach their full potential. They become flagbearers of their dreams and active as well as informed participants in shaping their own future.

Sadly, this is far from reality. In Nigeria, there are numerous challenges that hinder girls' access to education such as child labour and child marriage. While these situations may be removed from your current reality, they exist and are more prevalent than you may imagine. When children work at a young age instead of going to school, and when a person gets married before the age of 18, they are subjected to child labour and child marriage respectively. These two factors are significant obstacles to girls' education in Nigeria. Poverty often drives families to send their children to work at a young age, depriving them of their right to education and safe childhood.
Similarly, cultural and economic factors contribute to the prevalence of child marriage, robbing girls of opportunities and subjecting them to early pregnancies which often poses health risks for both mother and child. Girls who get married early are more likely to experience limited educational opportunities, domestic violence, and a higher likelihood of living in poverty.
Tackling these issues require several approaches including raising awareness, strengthening legal frameworks, and addressing the underlying social and economic factors that perpetuate these practices.
Remember where we started – envisioning a world where everyone has access to quality education. This is because we believe education is the key to empowering young girls. It equips them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to break free from the cycle of poverty and discrimination.
Educated girls can challenge gender norms, participate in social and political processes, and become agents of change in their communities. Education not only enhances their employability but also promotes their overall well-being, including their health and decision-making abilities.
And there are examples of the impact education can make to change lives and challenge stereotypes. Nigeria is home to numerous inspiring and accomplished women who have and are still achieving great success in various fields globally. Women like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the first African woman to become the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, and Ibukun Awosika, a prominent Nigerian businesswoman, author, and motivational speaker, and the first woman to become the chairman of First Bank of Nigeria are examples. These women and a host of others are proof of the world of difference education can make in people’s lives.

At Ejaosan Foundation, we continue to bridge the gap in various ways by supporting girls' education, providing meals for deprived children in public schools, establishing literacy clubs, providing mentorship, and creating awareness. These initiatives highlight the importance of collaborative efforts to ensure that girls have access to quality education and the necessary resources for their academic and personal growth.
If you would like to donate to our vital work, please do so here. Your support makes a huge difference in the lives and families of girls who lack access to resources that can help them have a fair start to life.
