Dance is a Woman!
She is an African; she dances not only to entertain but to express her joy, sadness, love and hope. Dance makes her feel alive. It is also a gateway for her to connect with her cultural heritage.
In a step, dance makes her feel both present and absent. In dance, she learns to count steps, read movements and understand measured rhythm. Dance becomes an essential part of her literacy journey. Dance is her mother tongue. It is an expression for her to freely communicate the reality of her motherland.
Dance…is Literacy!
This piece is motivated by the girls of Ejaosan Foundation (pictured here) expressing their cultural identity at the first Ejaosan Annual Inter-School Debate competition held in December 2018.
