Imagine being a 12-year-old, you wake up bright and early ready for the day. But instead of looking forward to a day of learning and playing, you are headed for the streets, in the real sense of the word. This is the reality of millions of girls whose potential has been overshadowed by circumstances beyond their control. As the sun sets, instead of being in their classrooms, they find themselves wandering the streets, their chance of education fading with each passing day.
Beyond being unable to gain access to the plethora of valuable educational resources that they deserve, uneducated girls become vulnerable citizens. They are greatly at risk of being exposed to harmful situations such as sexual exploitation, harassment and other forms of abuse putting them in danger.
Because they do not pass through formal education, they grow up without the knowledge of their rights and lack the confidence to pursue their aspirations. They may find themselves confined to predetermined roles and grow up deprived of their right to make quality choices for themselves and their families.
Amidst this struggle, there is hope for the girl child if we can come together as a collective force. We know that through the power of education, there is the possibility of positive transformation. These future leaders can gain the knowledge that will empower them to rise above the challenges life may throw at them. They can begin to make informed decisions about their health, future, marriage, and even general well-being.
In the long run, these girls become agents of change, inspiring other young girls and society at large, and further challenging the status quo. This is our dream.
Will you join us on our mission to keep girls in schools?
